I have stayed in countless hostels on three continents. If you’re a solo female traveler, you probably know that staying in hostels can be both an adventure and a challenge. While hostels are a fantastic way to save money and meet fellow travelers, they can also be a bit chaotic at times. But fear not! With these 12 tips, you can make your hostel stay not just tolerable, but downright enjoyable.
- Consider Your Comfort – Female-Only Dorms vs. Mixed Dorms: Depending on your comfort level, opt for a female-only dorm if available. It provides an added sense of security and camaraderie with fellow female travelers. However, if you’re open to a mixed dorm, it can offer a diverse social experience. Trust your instincts and choose the dorm type that aligns with your preferences for a more enjoyable hostel stay.
- Earplugs Are Your Best Friend: Hostel dorms can get noisy, especially if you’re a light sleeper. Pack some earplugs to ensure you get a good night’s rest amidst late-night arrivals, early departures and loud city streets.
- Choose Your Bunk Wisely: If you value privacy, opt for a top bunk. But if you’re someone who tends to make nighttime bathroom trips, be considerate and select a bottom bunk to avoid disturbing your roommates.
- Respect Shared Spaces: Remember that you’re sharing a room with others. Keep noise levels down after hours, avoid blow-drying your hair late at night, taking loud phone calls and practice good shared space etiquette.
- Stay Organized: Save yourself and your roommates the headache of a cluttered space. Keep your belongings tidy and accessible to avoid rummaging through your bag in the middle of the night.
- Pack Light: Hostel lockers are often small, so pack only what you truly need. Skip the oversized suitcase – it takes up valuable floor space and can be a nuisance. (My post on carry-on only travel is coming soon)
- Don’t Forget Your Lock: Bringing a sturdy lock is essential for securing your belongings in hostel lockers. Invest in a reliable lock to keep your valuables safe and give yourself peace of mind during your stay. I use my TSA luggage lock because it is something I already travel with.
- Be Friendly, but Respect Boundaries: While hostels are great for meeting people, remember that not everyone wants to engage in small talk. Be friendly and polite, but respect your fellow travelers’ space and privacy.
- Prep for Early Departures: If you have an early flight or tour, pack your bags the night before. Lay out your clothes, so you can be quiet and efficient when getting ready without disturbing others.
- Participate in Hostel Activities: Many hostels offer events, tours, free food, or game nights. Take advantage of these opportunities not only to meet fellow travelers but also to score some freebies and have a great time.
- Clean Up After Yourself: If you use communal kitchen facilities or utensils, be sure to clean up after yourself. A little consideration goes a long way in maintaining a harmonious hostel environment.
- Remember, It’s Just a Place to Sleep: Finally, keep in mind that a hostel is primarily a place to rest your head. You’re not obligated to spend all your time there, make friends, or cook elaborate meals in the communal kitchen. Feel free to explore and enjoy your destination.
With these tips in your back pocket your hostel stay as a solo traveler can be a breeze. Embrace the adventure, make new friends, and create lasting memories while being a considerate and responsible guest. If you have stayed at a hostel comment where you stayed below and if you enjoyed it. Happy travels!
